WREXHAM PEACE & JUSTICE FORUM PRESS RELEASE Saturday 15th July SHOPPERS URGED TO HELP END APARTHEID BY BOYCOTTING ISRAELI GOODS Members of Wrexham Peace & Justice Forum were in Wrexham town centre (outside Millets) this morning from 10am with a stall drawing attention to the desperate plight of the Palestinian people and urging a comprehensive boycott of Israeli goods. A spokesperson for WPJF, said: "For many years, Palestinians have suffered illegal occupation of their lands, discriminatory practices and extreme hardship at the hands of the Israelis. Israel has stolen Palestinian lands and water supplies, operates an Apartheid regime, and is constructing an Apartheid wall which separates many Palestinians from their land and livelihoods, their schools, shops and hospitals. Israeli soldiers shut gates in the wall at whim, or force Palestinians to queue for hours at checkpoints to reach their farms, jobs, schools and essential services. "Israel has launched a large-scale military operation against Gaza, one of the most densely populated and poorest areas. This has terrorised the civilian population, killed whole families, destroyed the only power station and the main bridges, and has created a humanitarian crisis with desperate shortages of food, water and basic medical supplies. "In the last few days, the Palestinian Ministry of Health has reported that explosives containing toxins and radioactive materials have been used by the Israelis in their attacks on Gaza. These have caused horrific injuries, burning and tearing the victim's body from the inside, leaving long-term deformations or giving surgeons no alternative but to amputate limbs. I am sickened to learn that the Israelis call their offensive 'Operation Summer Rains'. Britain invaded Iraq on the basis of chemical weapons that were never used because they didn't exist. I would like to ask how we can now remain silent and do nothing when Israel not only possesses these weapons, but is using them to attack civilians. This is a war crime. "We have been encouraging shoppers to bring pressure to bear on the Israeli government by boycotting all Israeli goods, and asking them to write and tell their shops and supermarkets what they are doing and why. The boycott of South African goods helped to bring down the Apartheid regime there; this boycott could do the same in Israel."
