Rascon received the award for gallant and selfless actions during an intense enemy attack in the Long Khanh Province of Vietnam in March 1966. At the time, Rascon was a 20-year-old specialist serving as a medic with the Reconnaissance Platoon, Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 503rd Airborne Infantry, 173rd Airborne Brigade (Separate).
